Cadmium Toxicity of Catfish Hetropneustes fossilis by short Term Exposure to Chelating Agent, Zeolite
M.Muthukani and R.D.Thilaga
Abstract
The aim of present study, heavy metal (Cd) taxicity in Catfish Heteropneustes fossilis was analyzed by short time exposure of 96 hrs. Heavy metal of Cadmium content in muscle, liver, gills, kidney and gonad tissues of H. fossilis. This study infers that the order of heavy metals accumulation is muscle > gills > gonads > liver > kidney and also heavy metal entry to the organisms through sediments due to the deposition of effluents intake of food materials, absorption of body tissue, drinking water, respiration via and metabolism.
Key words: Heteropneustes fossilis, Cadmium, Toxicity, Authoor, Tuticorin
Investigation on the phenological behavior of Nothopegia aureo-fulva Beed. in Agasthiyamalai Biosphere Reserve, Western Ghats, India
S. Saravanan and K. Muthuchelian
Abstract
Studies on the periodic behavior of a species are called phenology. Life cycle event of species may be greatly influenced by environmental factors. This is mostly regulated by external indication from environment. Vegetative phenological events such as leaf sprouting, leaf maturation, flushing, leaf fall and flowering, fruiting phenology of Nothopegia aureo-fulva have been regulated with climatic factors such as temperature, rainfall, humidity and CO2. To examine the relationship between phenological pattern of the species and climatic variables such as temperature and rainfall, which is Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients (rho) was used. Leaf initiation of N. aureo-fulva activity had significantly negative correlation (rho = - 0. 477; P < 0. 01) with rainfall. . Leaf abscission of N. aureo-fulva was having significantly positive correlation (rho = 0. 361; 0. 325; P < 0. 05) with the maximum and minimum temperatures. Significant negative correlations (rho = - 0. 424; - 0. 689; P < 0. 01) was observed for flower initiation with both maximum and minimum temperatures. All the fruit phases like initiation, maturation and ripening was not correlated with all the climatic factors such as rainfall, maximum and minimum temperatures. Hence, the data will be highly useful for conservation implementing the conservation strategies.

Evolving Genetic Code - Review
B. Singaravelan
Abstract
Studies on the periodic behavior of a species are called Genetic code is universal in all living organisms and it is frozen. Any change or alteration in the genetic code might lead to lethality. The canonical genetic code was assigned to 61 sense codons and 3 stop codons. But growing evidence on genetic code reassignments is thawing the Crick’s Frozen Accident Theory. These reassignments were observed in both mitochondrial and nuclear genomes and two main theories widely discussed for the codon reassignments are the codon capture theory and the ambiguous intermediate theory. Genetic code evolution may be advantageous or disadvantageous, but the beneficial variation might help the organism to adapt to the environmental needs. This genetic code flexibility opened up a new area of research to introduce non-standard amino acids to study the genotypic variations. In this review, past to the present day possible concepts on genetic code and reassignments have been discussed.
Key Words: Genetic code, reassignments, non-canonical codons, evolution, codon ambiguity.
