Abstract Aim: The study medicinal plants of Ocimum basilicum L. (Lamiaceae) commonly known as sweet basil, and it has been used as a traditional medicinal plant. The plant parts of O. basilicum L for the treatment of several diseases such as coughs, headaches and Ashma. The aim of the present study, traditional medicinal plants of Ocimum basilicum L. grown in Tirunelveli, Tenkasi and Kanyakumari District of Tamilnadu was investigated for essential oil content and composition and its potential of antimicrobial activity. Methods: The fresh samples of Ocimum basilicum L. leaves were thoroughly washed in tap water and essential oils of were obtained by hydro distillation method. The content of essential oil of O. basilicum L. (v/w (% ) were collected in three regions of Tirunelveli, Tenkasi and Kanyakumari districts and its essential oils of O. basilicum L. were evaluation of antimicrobial potential observed by agar disk diffusion methods. The oils of Ocimum basilicum L. were analyzed and identified by GC and GC-MS methods. Results: The results of essential oils content of O.basilicum L. were observed maximum content of oils in Tenkasi followed by Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli. Major components of the essential oils were thymol (19.4-60.1%), γ-terpinene (0.3-13.8%) and p-cymene (3.5-10.4%). The results clearly indicated that season has significant effect on quality and quantity of thyme oil. The essential oils derived from O. basilicum demonstrated significant activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Aspergillus niger. The highest levels of activity for these essential oils were noted against all tested bacteria and fungi during the summer season.
