Abstract
Aim: The main objective of this study was to conduct phytochemical screening and antimicrobial activity of fruits and fruit pulps of Garcinia mangostana Linn.
Methods: The preliminary phytochemical compounds were screened using different standard methods and anti-microbial activities of fruits and fruit pulps of G. mangostana Linn were evaluated against both organisms like bacteria and fungi using the disk - diffusion method.
Results: The results of the present study, preliminary phytochemical screening and identification of bioactive compounds in crude extracts of Garcinia mangostana Linn fruits and pulbs revealed the presence of phenols, flavonoids, glycosides, alkaloids, tannins and terpenoids and their ethanolic extract of fruits and pulps was observed that higher zone of inhibition active against Escherichia coli and Candida albicans. The conclusion of the present study suggests that the phenolic compounds of anthocyanins found in the fruits and pulp of G. mangostana contribute to antimicrobial activity.
